This is the Cape May Birding Hotline, a service of New Jersey Audubon
Society's Cape May Bird Observatory. This week's message was prepared
on Thursday, August 28, 2008. Highlights this week include sightings
of WHITE IBIS, HOODED MERGANSER, AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN, SHARP-SHINNED
HAWK, AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER, MARBLED GODWIT, LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER,
LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL, BLACK TERN, PHILADELPHIA VIREO, TENNESSEE
WARBLER, CAPE MAY WARBLER, LARK SPARROW, and DICKCISSEL.

The WHITE IBIS and AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN continued to be seen at Brig/
Forsythe NWR through 8/24. Other reports from Brig this week included
MARBLED GODWIT, LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER and BLACK TERN.
AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER, LARK SPARROW and DICKCISSEL were recorded from
the Higbee Dike on 8/26, along with 15 species of warblers, including
TENNESSEE and CAPE MAY.
LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER was noted at Stone Harbor Point on 8/22. A
YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER was noted at the Stone Harbor Heronry, also
on 8/22.
The season's first SHARP-SHINNED HAWK was tallied from Cape May Point
State Park on 8/26. A PHILADELPHIA VIREO was noted here on 8/24.
Numerous BLACK TERNS have been seen in "the rips", the State Park, and
the South Cape May Meadows/CMMBR throughout the week.
The lingering HOODED MERGANSER continued at the South Cape May Meadows
through 8/26. Over a dozen LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS continue along
the beachfront here.
