2006 Pineland Bird Surveys

This project is a collaborative effort of New Jersey Audubon Society (NJAS), and the New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife's Endangered and Nongame Species Program.  The data collected by volunteers will be used for management purposes by the NJ ENSP Landscape Project.

The purpose of this project is:

  • To assess abundance and distribution of bird populations breeding in  public lands of the New Jersey Pinelands.
  • To determine how habitat and landscape characteristics influence these birds so that we can implement sound management strategies

Why a bird survey in the Pinelands?

The Pinelands National Reserve consists of approximately 1.1 million acres in southern New Jersey. It represents 22% of the state's total land area and includes portions of seven counties (Atlantic, Burlington, Camden, Cape May, Cumberland, Gloucester, and Ocean), and all or parts of 56 municipalities.

Development of the unique flora of the Pinelands is closely related to the occurrence of fire.  Over 850 species of plants can be found here.  There are also unusual range overlaps where species of 109 southern plants and 14 northern plants reach their respective geographic limits.

Many unique species depend on the special environmental conditions present in the New Jersey Pinelands, including vegetation, fire, moisture, and water chemistry.  299 Bird species have been identified as occurring here, including 28 bird species listed as threatened or endangered by the New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife.

Public lands of the State of New Jersey comprise over 300,000 acres and include parks, forests, and wildlife management areas such as Wharton, Bass River, Brendan T. Byrne, Belleplain, Island Beach, Colliers Mills, and Greenwood among others.

CITIZEN SCIENTISTS NEEDED!

Pinelands Survey 2006

We are recruiting competent volunteers to undertake roadside surveys for  birds along established routes in the Pinelands, and collect data on bird abundance and habitat characteristics.

Participants must be familiar with birds identification, especially of birds likely to be seen in the Pinelands, and be willing to improve their skills!  Each volunteer will be expected to visit their study area 2 times during the period May 1st - June 26th.  Additional training in identification and counting methodology will be provided by NJ Audubon in April 2006.
