Focus on the Farmers

Meet the New Jersey farmers who grow our S.A.V.E. sunflower seed.

Mark Kirby at Derwood Farm in
Hillsborough, NJ.
Derwood Farm lies along the South Branch of the Raritan River in Hillsborough, New Jersey. Mark and Nancy Kirby founded the farm in 1985 which includes approximately 400 acres. Principal crops include soybeans, corn, wheat and sunflowers. Derwood Farm also raises livestock and produces forage for horses and grain for feed mills. Mark is the current chair of the Somerset County Agricultural Development Board and has served as the Regional Soil Conservation District Supervisor for the past 10 years.
Laine Farms, in Hillsborough, New Jersey is owned and operated by brothers Jim and Thomas Laine. The core of their operation is located along the Somerset and Hunterdon County border within the watershed of the South Branch of the Raritan River. Incorporated in 1980, Laine Farms derives income from approximately 700 acres of cultivated crops and hay and a feed mill that processes and bags dry feed for livestock. Primary crops include corn, soybean, wheat, oats and hay. Most of the yield from the crops planted by Laine Farms is bagged and sold as livestock feed onsite whereas hay is sold for forage for horses. Laine Farms has been a member of the Carbon Char Group since 2002 and began experimenting with biochar that same year.
