WEEKDAY MORNING FIELD
TRIPS IN ESSEX COUNTY
Led by Dave Hall
At this time of year, we will be looking for resident and
overwintering birds as well as scenery. Many of these trips are
to Essex County parks, the oldest county park system in the
United States. Dave will set an easy pace, and most of the
trails are level and wide, although a few have steep trail
sections and are a little muddy.
Cost: $6 for NJAS members,
$8 for nonmembers.

HATFIELD SWAMP
Thursday, December 4
8:30 to 11:00 a.m.
Meet at the parking lot of King’s Grocery in West Caldwell, near
the corner of Bloomfield and Passaic Avenues. We will be
searching for winter visitors and lingering fall migrants.
MILLS RESERVATION
Thursday, December 18
8:30 to 11:00 a.m.
Meet at the parking area on Edgecliff Road in Cedar Grove. We
will be searching for winter wildlife and will concentrate on
forest birds.
BECKER PARK
Thursday, January 15
8:30 to 11:00 a.m.
Meet in the parking lot of the Essex County Environmental Center
in Roseland. This is one of the best places for birds in the
county, with a mixture of meadow and woodland.
WEEQUAHIC PARK
Thursday, January 29
8:30 to 11:00 a.m.
Meet at the east end of the lake in this Newark park. We will be
searching for wintering ducks, gulls, and passerine birds. All
can be viewed along an easy trail around the lake.
EAGLE ROCK RESERVATION
Thursday, February 12
8:30 to 11:00 a.m.
Meet at the Memorial Parking Lot in West Orange. There are
beautiful views of Manhattan, and we will look for the birds of
open spaces and woodlands.
HATFIELD SWAMP
Thursday, February 26
8:30 to 11:00 a.m.
Meet at the parking lot of King’s Grocery in West Caldwell, near
the corner of Bloomfield and Passaic Avenues. This area can be a
magical place for birds and other animals of winter.

CANOE BROOK RESERVIOR, MILLBURN
Saturday, December 6
8:00 to 11:00 a.m.
Please call ahead to register for this birding trip. This is the
best place in Essex County for wintering waterfowl, hawks, and
Bald Eagles.
SOUTH MOUNTAIN RESERVATION
Saturday, January 17
8:00 to 11:00 a.m.
Meet in the Turtle Back Zoo parking lot in West Orange. This is
one of the best places to view birdlife in the county during all
seasons of the year.

Saturday, February 14
8:00 to 11:00 a.m.
Meet at the parking lot of King’s Grocery in West Caldwell, near
the corner of Bloomfield and Passaic Avenues. We will spend the
morning searching for birds and other animals.
FAMILY PROGRAMS
AT THE ESSEX COUNTY ENVIRONMENTAL CENTER
For children in kindergarten to 3rd grade. Preregistration

WINTER BIRDS
Saturday, December 6
10:30 a.m. to noon
What birds can we expect to see in our winter backyards? Learn
how to make a recycled bird feeder and take home a pinecone
feeder made with seed and suet. Weather permitting, we will walk
outside to see and hear some winter birds.
Cost: $5 members, $7 nonmembers.
ANIMAL SIGNS AND TRACKS
Saturday, January 10
10:30 a.m. to noon
Days are short and the nights are long and cold. Activities and
stories will help us understand how animals cope. If weather
permits, we’ll walk and look for animal signs and tracks on the
trail near the Passaic River in Essex County.
Cost: $5 members, $7 nonmembers.
OWLS OF ESSEX COUNTY
Saturday, February 7
10:30 a.m. to noon
Eight species of owls can be found in Essex County at certain
times of the year. Activities and stories will help us
appreciate these (mostly) nocturnal predators. We’ll learn to
imitate their calls and investigate "pellets" they leave behind.
Cost: $5 members, $7 nonmembers.
