PART-TIME URBAN ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATOR
Roseland, NJ
Job Description
The urban environmental educator has
duties primarily in the education branch of the New Jersey
Audubon Society (NJAS) mission. This person provides natural
science programs to schools, interested groups and the general
public in the Essex County region. He/she will coordinate NJAS
public programs offered at the Essex County Environmental Center
(ECEC); conduct teacher professional development with urban
schools and work with partner organizations to teach children
and their families about the environment in urban parks. The
urban environmental educator will take an active role in
promoting NJAS as a membership-based conservation organization.
Location
The Essex County Environmental Center is
owned and operated by the County of Essex and located in
Roseland, NJ. NJAS is a key programming partner with the County
at this site.
Duties and Responsibilities:

Plan, develop, schedule, and conduct
natural history programs for schools, special interest
groups and the general public, including family programs,
open houses, etc.

Work in conjunction with Essex
County staff to plan and conduct a Summer Nature Day Camp.

Actively promote NJAS and center
programs by preparing a the seasonal public program schedule
(Seasons/Center Focus), representing NJAS to the general
public and to members at conferences, nature fairs and other
gatherings

Carry out administrative duties as
needed including preparing monthly records of programs,
maintaining the orderly management of confirmation and
follow-up materials as well as education materials and
supplies.

Interact with other NJAS staff to
promote statewide education initiatives.

Network with local organizations to
promote the mission of New Jersey Audubon Society
In addition the above, the urban
environmental educator will work with other staff on all
projects or tasks necessary for the good order of the facility.
Qualifications

B.A. or B.S. in the sciences or
education, preferred.

Good natural history knowledge of NJ
habitats or teaching skills with an understanding of
pedagogy. Demonstrated experience teaching in urban
settings.

Supervision
The urban environmental educator works

Public Education Outreach Coordinator
New Jersey Keep It Green Campaign
Description:
New Jersey has been a national leader in preserving open
space, historic sites and farmland over the past decade.
However, the State’s preservation programs – Green Acres, the
Farmland Preservation Program and the New Jersey Historic Trust
– will run out of money in less than a year causing preservation
efforts to come to a halt. At the same time, New Jersey
continues to lose 40 acres of open space to development each
day.
This position is for a full or part time public education and
outreach coordinator to raise awareness about the success of the
preservation programs as well as the existing needs of these
programs. The work of this person will be done in coordination
with the existing Keep It Green Campaign, a coalition of over
100 groups throughout the State. The activities of the
coordinator will be primarily grassroots organizing and
educational efforts on the local, municipal and State level.
This position will be for a period of 3-8 months, depending upon
working hours, with possibility of extension.
Position Goal:
Increase public awareness about the successes and needs of
New Jersey’s preservation programs, including the Green Acres
and Farmland Preservation programs and the NJ Historic Trust.
Job Requirements:
The public education coordinator will organize an educational
campaign focused on increasing awareness of the need and
importance for long-term funds to both preserve and steward New
Jersey’s open space, farmland and historic preservation
treasures as well as to educate local and municipal government
and groups on local preservation opportunities.
Specific activities of the coordinator would include:
- Scheduling and conducting information sessions for
municipal and county associations and officials
- Working with nonprofits and the community in various
regions of the state to host information meetings for their
members and the public
- Developing a network of individuals, groups and
corporations to assist in this educational campaign
- Attending and distributing information at public events
throughout the State
- Organizing press events or releasing press statements
highlighting project successes and recently received GSPT
grants in coordination with local nonprofits
- Submitting opinion editorials to major papers and
requesting editorial board meetings to discuss the
importance of these programs
- Contacting non-profit organizations and businesses that
might be interested in this issue and sharing information
about the successes and needs of the GSPT
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree.
- Strong interest or background in community and
grassroots organizing, education, conservation, preservation
or environmental issues.
- Ability to work with diverse constituencies, both
internal and external to the Keep it Green Campaign.
- Excellent communication, media experience and
organizational skills.
- Ability to work independently and initiate projects.
- Proficiency in computer software including Microsoft
Word and Excel.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule.
- Valid New Jersey State Driver License.

Habitat Restoration Grounds Assistant
General Description
New Jersey Audubon Society’s Scherman Hoffman Wildlife
Sanctuary in Bernardsville is seeking a part time/seasonal
employee to assist with the restoration of forest and meadow
wildlife habitats and general grounds maintenance. Restoration
involves the removal of non-native, invasive species of plants
and replacement with native plants. Grounds maintenance
involves lawn mowing, weed wacking and other basic outdoor
responsibilities.
Position Responsibilities:
- Removal of undesirable plants including multi-flora
rose, Japanese barberry and Oriental bittersweet using hand
tools.
- Planting of native trees, shrubs and other plants using
hand tools.
- Assisting sanctuary personnel in the supervision of
volunteers with above.
- Occasional use of power tools including lawn mowers and
weed wackers.
- Occasional participation in sanctuary research
activities.
- Maintain appropriate records, as necessary.
Qualifications:
- Prior experience in gardening, landscaping or habitat
restoration desirable.
- Demonstrated interest in conservation.
- Knowledge of invasive and native plants a plus.
- Ability to work independently following a short period
of initial training.
- Minimum age is 18.
This is a part-time/seasonal position. Starting immediately,

12-Month Environmental Educator

Responsibilities: Environmental educators report to
the Program Director and are primarily responsible for
conducting environmental education programs and interpretive
walks for students, scouts, day camp participants, families, and
adults. Environmental educators are also responsible for
planning and conducting activities for special events, leading
public programs and field trips, assisting in the care of our
snakes and raptors, writing press releases, contributing to the
Center’s calendar of events, office tasks, routine maintenance,
and additional duties as required by the Program Director and/or
Sanctuary Director. Environmental educators will be responsible
for completing one special project during the twelve-month
period. Opportunities exists for enthusiastic individuals to
develop curriculum and possibly research, write, and broadcast
radio programs.
Position Commitment: September 1, 2007 through August 31, 2008.
Qualifications: Baccalaureate degree or advanced
degree students. Interested applicants must be willing to work
and live in a residential/nature center setting and be willing
to work flexible hours on occasion. Teaching experience

Total Package Value: $19,200
